Writers, readers and literary appreciators will be flocking to Fed Square for Melbourne Writers Festival 2016, with a program of free and ticketed events including talks, walks, storytelling and interactive experiences from 26 August to 4 September 2016. The annual two-week celebration is bringing together an impressive array of talents including poet and musician PJ Harvey, World Vision Australia CEO Tim Costello, comedian Alexi Sayle of ‘The Young Ones’ fame, and author Lionel Shriver, best known for ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’.
Taking over the Square on 4 September is Roald Dahl Day – a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the renowned children’s author with free events for people of all ages. Join a live reading of Fantastic Mr Fox with Danny Katz; find out how Tim Minchin came to compose a musical based on Roald Dahl’s children’s classic Matilda in a screening of behind-the-scenes excerpts from Matilda and Me; learn how to draw Quentin Blake’s iconic illustration of Roald Dahl’s beloved character, The BFG; and join a gloriumptious game of trivia with questions, quizzes and puzzles about all things Roald Dahl with host Felice Arena.
Across Fed Square there will be events to spark the interest of anyone who has picked up a book! The Festival Club at ACMI Café + Bar will serve as a meeting place for writers, readers and festivalgoers. Readings Bookstore will be taking over the Atrium with a bookshop open daily during the festival, featuring live illustrations from the likes of graphic novelist Sam Wallman and children’s author illustrator known for Old Tom, Leigh Hobbs. Caravan Conversations in the Dumbo Feather Airstream will bring together small groups to spark inspiring conversations. Tales from across the world will be brought to life for children in the Story Peddlers Tent. Enter the visually evocative world of Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and The Rose at ACMI, magically created by acclaimed artist Del Kathryn Barton and renowned filmmaker Brendan Fletcher.
