The 5,000 Poppies project is now crossing oceans.
Poppies are being sent to Melbourne from knitters in Scotland, England, Ireland, the US and Greece and the total number of poppies now has grown to over 120,000.
Each month for over two years, a dedicated group of knitters come together at the Crotchet at Fed Square sessions to hook together crocheted poppy flowers.
Led by Lynn Berry, the 5,000 Poppies project began as a tribute to our ANZACs with the intention to create a small installation at Fed Square for the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.
At the time, the target of 5,000 seemed like a big feat to conquer, yet with unexpected popularity that has reached all corners of Australia as well as knitters overseas, the team recently counted 120,000 poppies.
The plans for installation on Fed Square on Saturday 25 April are now much more grandeur – imagine canopies or fields of hand-made poppies filling the Square!
Full details of these grand plans are yet to be released.
